EUA's Hit a 10 Month High as Oil stays above USD $ 110 / Barrel
April 14, 2008 09:37 AM
The News
Reuters is reporting that the Benchmark prices for European Carbon emissions permits hit a 10-month high on Thursday. The increase is tracking with high natural gas and record oil prices, traders said.
Our Take
With Crude oil staying historically high and 2007 European Commission carbon emissions reported to be increasing, we will continue to see very strong demand for Phase 2 EUA's. This volatile market mixed with high energy costs and no let off in consumer demand will continue to push the demand side of the markets higher. The trend is your friend in the short-mid term and the long term perspective is bullish as well.
Senate bill, S.F. 2818, is currently making its way through both the MN House and Senate regarding GHG emissions and future reductions.

The News
Monday March 10 St. Paul, MN There is currently a bill making its way through both the MN House and Senate regarding GHG emissions and future reductions. The Senate bill, S.F. 2818 is currently awaiting amendment with a provision authored by Eric Jackson and carried by Sen. Kathy Saltzman. The amendment seeks to recognize GHG reductions resulting from actions taken after the 2005 baseline year (established last year in MN Statute 216), but before any mandated reductions are required. Known as \"early adoption\" this is aimed at commercial entities who otherwise might be tempted to wait to take actions that would reduce their carbon footprint. The alignment of business interests and environmental interests is critical in our fight against global warming.
Our Take
This bill is important to watch as it appears that the local and regional GHG Emission reduction initiatives will be in play far in front of any National legislation. Stay Tuned for constant updates!
Rueters article on 2008 Global Carbon Market
March 03, 2008 08:15 AM
The News
Reuters news service is reporting that the 2008 Global GHG Offsets of CO2 reductions will increase by 56% as Europe tightens it program regarding GHG's.
Our Take
This is expected as this market is in its infancy. The problem is that the global carbon market is only on the radar for folks caught up in the involuntary regulatory issues outside of the US.
But it is coming our way and no one, especially with our US markets performing poorly, will want to be sitting on the sidelines as a new market emerges with as of yet undefined profit potential.
NYMEX Green Futures Platform
March 02, 2008 10:33 PM
The News
NYMES recently unveiled its new platform for Carbon Based Futures Trading. You can find it at www.greenfutures.com
Our Take
This is a great first step for the NYMEX. Unfortunately it will not do much for the US Voluntary programs that are currently struggling to find a footing, as the NYMEX will focus on EUA - Futures and Options contacts as well as the good'ol SO2 & NOX contracts. But it is something we will be watching with great Interest, so stay tuned!
